A Short History of Gothic Jewels
Gothic jewellery has its roots in the Victorian era. After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria entered a long period of mourning and wore black for the rest of her life. Mourning jewellery, made with jet, black onyx, black enamel and pearls, became fashionable across Britain and beyond.
These pieces were full of meaning. Black stones symbolised grief and remembrance, while pearls were often read as tears. Many pieces carried the spirit of memento mori, Latin for "remember that you must die", a gentle reminder to cherish life and love while we have them.
